Step inside the Golden Age University of Alcalá with an official guide who studied in its classrooms, with entry tickets to the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso included. You will discover Cardinal Cisneros' dream and the secrets of the Manzana Cisneriana, where Lope de Vega, Quevedo and Calderón de la Barca studied. It is a 90-minute visit, twice the usual length, to truly understand how Europe's first university city was organised. We begin at the former Convento de Málaga, now the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and continue along Calle Colegios, past the Hostería del Estudiante (Spain's second Parador) and today's Parador, Calle San Pedro y San Pablo, the stage of student pranks, and Calle Libreros, home to the Golden Age printing presses. After walking around the university we stand before its Plateresque façade, an open book carved in stone, and go inside: the Chapel of San Ildefonso with Cisneros' tomb, the courtyards of Santo Tomás de Villanueva, the Philosophers and the Trilingual, and the grand finale in the Paraninfo, beneath its Mudéjar coffered ceiling, where the King and Queen present the Cervantes Prize every 23 April. There is a visual challenge on the façade and a game at the end. Groups of 20 people maximum. Children under 12 do not pay. If you cancel more than 24 hours in advance, 75% is refunded: the university entry is paid in advance and is non-refundable.
